Sustainable Energy Supply in Vietnam

2020

The steep growth of electricity demand in Vietnam (11% per year on average since 2006) calls for a deep rethinking of the Vietnamese electrical power system. Its topological structure indeed may not be well suited for a deep penetration of renewable energy sources and a predictable increase of reactive industrial loads. The Vietnamese power system is described and a few analytical methods are considered for its study both in steady state and in dynamic conditions in different scenarios. The power system simulation software Neplan is used for the implementation of the system’s model and the performing of the dynamic analysis.

Analysis of voltage dips propagation in MV distribution networks by using ATP-EMTP code

2003

In this paper, voltage dips simulation in electric power MV distribution networks by using an improved ATP circuit-breaker model are reported. An equivalent circuit of a MV distribution system is employed. The circuit-breaker is simulated by using a tool written in MODELS language and by arranging a time-variable differential arc-conductance based on the combination of Mayr's and Cassie's equations. The simulations carried out have shown how the amplitude of the voltage dips depends on the type and location of the fault and their duration is strictly related to the circuit-breaker parameters.

A new modified Inc-Cond MPPT technique and its testing in a whole PV simulator under PSC

2015

In this paper a new modified Inc-Cond MPPT technique able to lead PV plants to work in the real MPP (Maximum Power Point) under PSC (Partial Shading Condition) is proposed. The new Inc-Cond MPPT technique working principle is fully explained, discussed and then successfully tested in a whole and reliable PV simulator conceived and set-up by the Authors in order to test and compare several new MPPT algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed Inc-Cond MPPT technique is able to successfully lead the PV plant to work in the real MPP both in the cases of instantaneous and gradual changing of shading and of temperature conditions.

Photovoltaic plant array reconfiguration: Design of a new device

2014

An efficient strategy to improve unequally irradiated PV plants performances is based on the reconfiguration of the connections between the modules. In this paper, an algorithm, for this purpose conceived, is presented. Moreover, the design, realization and finally also the set up of a new reconfiguration system device is fully shown and discussed. The algorithm conceived simulates several possible series-parallel connections under varying irradiation conditions, and determines the optimal modules connection in order to get the maximum output power. In this way, the reconfiguration system may set up the reconfiguration strategy. The reconfiguration system prototype set up, basically consist…

Modeling the Sequential Switching Shunt Series Regulator

2005

This letter characterizes, in terms of the bandwidth and limit cycle frequency of its constituent subsystems, the sequential switching shunt series regulator -S/sup 4/R, a high-efficiency, low-mass and volume power cell devised to power the next generation of regulated power buses in telecommunication spacecrafts. Transconductance power source modeling is used to obtain linear and nonlinear models. These are used to establish a design control strategy which involves the dynamic response in large load requirements or at the end of the satellite life. Simulations and experimental results are also given to demonstrate the validity of the model.

A Generalized Framework for Optimal Sizing of Distributed Energy Resources in Micro-Grids Using an Indicator-Based Swarm Approach

2014

In this paper, a generalized double-shell framework for the optimal design of systems managed optimally according to different criteria is developed. Optimal design is traditionally carried out by means of minimum capital and management cost formulations and does not typically consider optimized operation. In this paper, the optimized multiobjective management is explicitly considered into the design formulation. The quality of each design solution is indeed defined by the evaluation of operational costs and capital costs. Besides, the assessment of the operational costs term is deduced by means of the solution of a multiobjective optimization problem. Each design solution is evaluated usin…

A double-shell design approach for multiobjective optimal design of microgrids

2010

This work develops a new double shell approach to optimal design for multi-objective optimally managed systems. The cost of each design solution can be defined by the evaluation of operational issues and capital costs. In most systems, the correct definition of operational issues can be deduced by means of the solution of a multi-objective optimization problem. The evaluation of each design solution must thus be deduced using the outcome of a multi-objective optimization run, namely a Pareto hyper-surface in the n-dimensional space of operational objectives. In the literature, the design problem is usually solved by considering a single objective formulation of the operational issue. In thi…

Polluting loads detection in power systems: a decision-making strategy based on nonactive power measurements

2010

In this paper a novel decision-making strategy is proposed for the detection of polluting loads in three-phase power systems. It makes use of simple indices, which are expressed as a function of some nonactive power quantities, previously proposed by the authors and derived from the approach of the IEEE Std. 1459–2000. The decision-making rules for the proposed strategy are presented and discussed, by means of some simulation tests.

A novel approach based on nonactive powers for the identification of disturbing loads in power systems

2007

In this paper, a new approach is proposed for the detection of harmonic sources in polluted power systems. It is a single- point strategy, based on a comparison among different "nonactive" power quantities proposed in literature that, in the same working conditions, assume different values at the same metering section. Some simulations tests were carried out on a standard IEEE test system proposed by other authors as a benchmark system for the analysis of multipoint measurement techniques for harmonic pollution monitoring. The obtained results show that the proposed single-point approach is in agreement with other strategies already proposed in the literature and can provide useful indicati…

Comparison of Nonactive Powers for the Detection of Dominant Harmonic Sources in Power Systems

2008

This paper deals with an innovative technique for the detection of disturbing loads in distorted power systems. The technique is a single-point strategy based on a comparison among different ldquononactiverdquo power quantities already proposed in the literature, which are measured at the same metering section. In this paper, the effectiveness of the strategy is discussed, which also considered the errors of the measurement transducers; the analysis is supported by simulation tests, which were carried out on both a simple single-phase system and an IEEE standard three-phase test power system. The latter was used by other authors as a benchmark system for the analysis of multipoint measureme…
